National Cemetary Salisbury, NC

There are 18 burial trenches just beyond the two monuments in this photo.  The inscription on the large monument to the left reads:

“In 18 trenches, just South of this spot, rest the bodies of 11,700 soldiers of the United States Army, who perished during the years1864 and 1865 while held by the Confederate Military Authorities as prisoners of war in a stockade near this place.”

Did we do this?

Here’s a couple of photos from the Blues Festival from last fall.  I especially liked this old canon at the Hall house.

We are all familiar with the angel holding the wounded soldier too.
