A Little About Me

If you were sent here from Timeless Memories Photography, you are on the right page.  I've combined both of my websites here under JL Dearman Photography.

Hi, how ya doin’? My name is Jack and you have found the right photographer to capture your special occasion. I promise you will be more than satisfied and have a great time to boot! My goal is to give you images that will invoke a feeling within you. I always remember how something or someone made me feel long after I’ve forgotten all the details. The creative side of me let’s me see an image in my minds eye before I take it and the Virgo part of me assures you that I have taken every step possible to provide you with a high quality product.

I’m located in historical Salisbury, NC and just love the rich southern history this area offers. The choices are endless for location portrait sessions. My passion is senior pictures, wedding photography and family portraits. I’ve been involved in some type of racing before I could legally drive, so you’ll see a lot of pictures of races on here too. By choosing JLDearman Photography, you will be guaranteed a session you will remember.

Best of 2009 Drag Racing Shots

I want to share a few of my favorite shots from this past season at Mooresville Dragway.  I am intrigued with pictures that tell a story and start you thinking about what the photographer is trying to tell you through the picture.  I always try to include something into a shot that will hold the viewers attention.

In the shot below, Chris Rini and his crew chief go through this ritual before every run.  This shot reminds me of a matador teasing the bull.  They are in the arena with the spectators watching the dialog unfold to see who will be the final victor.  I especially like the way his crew chief is posed with his hands on his hips and tapping his foot impatiently.

In the next shot I noticed how the roof line of Chris’ Dodge Avenger blended with the tire smoke.  Like vapor trails coming off a jet airplane wing.  I guess that would pretty well explain why Chris is alway finishing first!  I shot this with my flash on rear curtain sync, which will most often produce a “ghosting” effect on background objects.  The young man to the right seems to be cheering Chris on in an eerie sort of way!

Here’s a shot of Todd Howard and Rocky Rainor pairing off in the Mad Dawg Final Points Race.  It reminds me of the way super-hero’s suddenly appear out of a cloud of smoke.

On this shot I did purposely positioned myself in an ideal spot as the sun was getting low in the sky.  I knew I could catch some cool shadows and as an added bonus – some pretty darn good “Rembrandt Lighting”  for “Car Portraits!”  I liked the way the light accented the translucent chutes too.

I couldn’t leave out this shot of my favorite chopped ‘57.  Reminds me of the “Batmobile” speeding through Gotham city chasing the Joker!

I love to shoot pictures in the staging lanes.  It seems when I can include people and emotion into a shot it tells the story instead of just having another nice picture.  Here I caught this young lady ready to pull into the water-box sizing up her adversary out of the corner of her eye.

I hope you enjoyed these pictures.  This cold (non-racing) weather sure makes me look forward to the start of next season.  Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

See ya at the races,

Jack

Livingstone Blue Bears Team Captain

I met this fellow a couple of months ago. He stands 6′ 9″ tall so I couldn’t help but notice him. A short ways into our conversation I popped the dumb question “You play basketball?” DUH !! I asked him his name – “Bama. I was thinkin’ it fits ’cause he would do a good job bammin anyone that got cross with him! (Strike 2 and I’m on a roll!) Acutally he’s a very nice guy and he get’s his nickname from where he’s from – Hoover/Leeds Alabama! Well come to find out he’s the center and team captain for the Livingstone Blue Bears. They are currently undefeated in the CIAA conference. ( 5-0)  He is due to graduate this May with a triple major in the business and accounting fields and is thinking about a career playing basketball. The way I see it he can’t loose either way he goes!  Quite an intelligent and nice young man with a bright future ahead.

I talked him into coming over to my place to shoot a few – photo’s that is!  We had a good time and here are a few shots from tonight.

While he was here he asked if I would take a picture of his tattoo.  No Problem.  I about fell over when I saw it.  So much detail (and such a large piece of real estate to post it on too!)   ‘Bama told me it took 16 hours total broken up into 8 two hour sessions.

Sophie in the Studio

Today Andy and Licy brought little Sophie up from Charlotte for another photo session. She sure is growing up fast. It’s been 9 months since I took her newborn photos and it seems like yesterday! I thought I’d try a little something different today switching to a high-key backdrop. Here’s a couple of my favorites from today’s session.

Kent & Deanna

Today the weather cooperated again.  I just love the cool nights and sunshine during the day.  Off to Hurley Park again – you just can’t find the variety of settings and beautiful backgrounds for portraits anywhere else.  Kent & Deanna have a couple of super kids – after spending 5 minutes with all of them I knew where Austin and Destiny got their personalities!  Austin kind of reminded me of myself when I was that age.  I had a sort of telepathy that relayed when I wasn’t being watched so closely.  Of course that sent me off exploring, then Destiny was always smiling and laughing.  Like Daughter, Like Mother.  We all had a great time!  Here are a few of my favorite shots from today’s session.

Ashley

This past weekend Ashley was anxious to have her senior pictures taken and mother nature finally decided to cooperate.    She wanted a scenic location and Hurley Park immediately came to mind.  Ashley agreed and wanted to know if she could bring a friend along to get a couple of picture of them together.  I told her no problem, after all she will remember all the fun they had in school for years to come every time she reminisces over her pictures.    Here’s some of the shots from Sunday.  I’m thinkin’ that Ashley has been in front of a camera before, because she took right off and didn’t need but very little coaching with her poses.
